Last October when I went to Iceland I had just discovered and become addicted to crochet. In fact, I took a project with me, on a hand luggage only campervan holiday! Anyway, while I was there I was inspired by all these beautiful colours of Icelandic scenery and planned to make myself an “Iceland blanket” when I got back.
The pattern I chose was the “spice of life” blanket, which is free and here http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spice-of-life-blanket. The pattern was really fun to do if you are new to crochet as you learn lots of stitches along the way.
Of course I changed the colours to my own “Iceland colours”. I used Stylecraft Special Aran acrylic yarn, in white, black, aster, dark brown, cloud blue, graphite, pistachio, gold, and spice. I used a 6mm hook and 1 ball of each colour was enough to make half the pattern. (I only made half the pattern because it was huge enough already at 130cm square! Maybe I should have used a smaller hook and DK yarn and it would have turned out smaller.)
As a first blanket and second ever project it’s not perfect and I’m sure I could do a better job now, but I love it because it reminds me of my Iceland adventure.
